re-elect NATASHA WARMENHOVEN

AS SAN JUAN COUNTY AUDITOR

RE-ELECT NATASHA WARMENHOVEN AS SAN JUAN COUNTY AUDITOR

Experience. Integrity. Stability.

I am proud and excited to announce my candidacy for re-election as San Juan County Auditor.

  • proven record

Over the last six years, I have served the residents of San Juan County with a commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and delivering dependable county services.

As Auditor, I have been a steady and reliable leader during a transformative period for our local government. My tenure has been defined by a focus on "getting the work done and done right", ensuring that every ballot is counted securely and impartially, every financial report is accurate, and every resident is served with professionalism and respect.

  • experience over uncertainty

The role of County Auditor requires more than just technical knowledge; it requires a temperament characterized by professionalism, level-headedness, and a dedication to the oath of office.

The Auditor’s Office is a foundation of our County's trust. It requires a leader who remains focused on the mission, encourages excellence with every interaction, treats all employees and residents with dignity, and brings a calm, steady hand to the daily challenges of local government. I am running to continue the progress we’ve made and to ensure this office remains a place of stability and exceptional quality for all islanders.

I invite the community to support a proven leader who has already demonstrated I can do the job, and do it well.

Record of Accomplishment

During my first term, I have overseen several key initiatives that have strengthened the Auditor’s office and benefited our community:

  • Balanced & Accessible Budgeting: Working closely with the County Council and Department Leaders, I played a important role in navigating complex budget cycles, helping to deliver balanced budgets for the 2024-2025 biennial budget and the 2026 annual budget, despite significant economic pressures. I worked to standardize the budget book, implement a Budget-in-Brief, and expand quarterly financial reports, making County financials more accessible to the community.

  • Election Integrity & Outreach: I have prioritized an informed electorate and ensured that every election; from local levies to national races, is conducted with the highest level of security and transparency.

  • Collaborative Environment: I challenged myself and my staff to meticulously research law and policy, implement streamlined procedures, and cross-train within and across departments. This ensures that our customers receive the best service and eliminates disruptions to service during staff absences.

  • Financial Modernization & Accountability: I am leading the effort to implement a new financial management system for the County. This transition is crucial for improving efficiency and ensuring that San Juan County remains fiscally accountable. The transition was placed on hold due to staffing constraints but is now well under way with a go live date of March 2027, in time to replace the current software as it reaches it’s end-of-life.

  • Online Dog Licensing: I lead the development of an online dog licensing system providing easier access to all dog owners, regardless of their home island.

  • Continued Trust & Operational Excellence: I continued where my predecessor left off... from processing thousands of licenses to maintaining meticulous financial records to overseeing mandatory hand recounts with 100% accuracy, I have ensured the Auditor’s Office continues to run smoothly.

I appreciate my staff that show up for this community to provide exceptional and reliable service. The role of Auditor is impossible to do as one person, and I am constantly impressed with the expertise and professionalism that my team bring to their respective roles. The success of the Auditor’s Office is credited to their hard work, dedication, and passion.

Looking Forward

My vision for the next four years includes:

  • Completing the transformation of the county’s enterprise resource planning software, beginning with the financial management system, then implementing human resource/payroll and asset management systems. As our current software is reaching its end of life, this is an essential transition.

  • Continuing to protect the integrity of our local elections.

  • Maintaining the highest standard of fiscal management that San Juan County residents expect and deserve.

  • Offering exceptional service to all of our customers - County employees, voters, vehicle & vessel owners, dog guardians, vendors, grantors, and every resident of the San Juan Islands.

I will continue to build a mindset that treats every moment, no matter how small, as an opportunity to build trust, create value, and reflect on the Auditor Office’s high standards.

CAREER

I graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. I spent five years in private accounting, with a focus on healthcare foundations. I elected to switch to governmental accounting and spent four years with the University of Washington as an accountant. I began supporting the Division of Medical Oncology, Melanoma/Renal Program in Seattle then moved to Friday Harbor Laboratories. I joined San Juan County as Chief Deputy Auditor in January 2020 and was elected to my first term as San Juan County Auditor, which began in January 2023.

For close to a decade, I volunteered my accounting knowledge as a tax preparer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program through my local United Way organizations. My husband and I now spend our free time fostering for APS-FH, in addition to caring for our own animals.

PERSONAL

I was born in southern England and moved to Arizona when I was ten. I met my husband Chad in high school and we have loved each other for 25 years. Our shared love of the ocean and cooler weather eventually brought us to WA in 2016 and to San Juan Island in April 2019. My husband lived here as a child and shared his passion for the islands with me. It is a dream come true to live our lives in these beautiful islands.

Our favorite hobbies include hiking, boating, DIY projects, kayaking, dog walks on the beach, relaxing on the hammock, and rides in our Jeep. We love spending time with our family including visiting our nieces in Arizona or family and friends in England. Our days are kept busy by our animals - two dogs and four cats. We often have extra animals that we foster through APS-FH. In addition to his full time, remote work as a support technician and technical writer, Chad is a volunteer fire fighter for San Juan Island.

THIS CAMPAIGN IS DEDICATED TO MY FATHER-IN-LAW, who WAS A committed, LIFE-LONG PUBLIC SERVANT.
HE BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN EVERYONE, LED WITH INTEGRITY AND JOY, AND SET THE STANDARD I STRIVE TO MEET EVERYDAY.
